Asahi-dake, the highest mountain in Hokkaido (2,290m), offers some incredible backcountry skiing. You can either take the ropeway (cable car) or skin up. From the top of the ropeway, you can skin up to explore the fumaroles (definitely worth the detour) or directly enjoy great backcountry skiing down to the base.
